OSTEOPOROSIS
Description:
Osteoporosis is a disease in
which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented
or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until
a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, typically
occur in the hip, spine, and wrist.
Osteoporosis is caused by demineralization, and necessitates rapid
replacement of bone minerals and improved bone density to prevent
brittle bones.
Sign & Symptoms:
Osteoporosis itself has no specific symptoms; its main consequence
is the increased risk of bone fractures. Osteoporotic fractures are
those that occur in situations where healthy people would not normally
break a bone. They are therefore regarded as fragility fractures.
Typically, fragility fractures occur in the vertebral column, rib,
hip and wrist.
